Why does Gore-Tex require washing and maintenance

Act.1 Advantages of Gore-Tex and maintenance requirements

Gore-Tex is a waterproof and breathable material. Gore-Tex rain jackets are made to keep rainwater out, but still allow water vapor to pass through. Therefore, unlike most rain jackets, they keep you dry in the rain.

For outdoor lovers, Gore-Tex is probably the most common waterproof material. Gore-Tex is the best material for an outdoor buddy that will keep you dry. It is also highly reliable, as it is used in serious fields such as medical and military applications.

However, without proper maintenance, Gore-Tex cannot be used to its fullest potential. Failure to maintain a Gore-Tex rain jacket can make it more miserable to wear than a disposable rain jacket. And worst of all, it can compromise your outdoor safety.

Act.2 Structure of GORE-TEX and why maintenance required

Structure of Gore-Tex

In fact, there is no such thing as a "Gore-Tex" fabric. This is a common misconception. Gore-Tex itself is a very thin film-like membrane. This membrane has microscopic pores that are invisible to the eye. These pores allow water vapor to pass through, but not liquid water. This structure makes GORE-TEX both waterproof and breathable.

However, because GORE-TEX itself is a film-like membrane, it cannot be used by itself in clothing due to its durability and feel. Therefore, GORE-TEX is used as an interlining material in combination with common fabrics as an outer layer and a lining material. In this way, GORE-TEX is protected from the harsh external environment while still providing a comfortable fit.

The outer fabric is then treated to repel water, as it is directly affected by rain. This is the reason why water repellent treatment is the main reason why GORE-TEX products require maintenance.

Reasons why GORE-TEX products deteriorate

GORE-TEX itself and its performance do not deteriorate because it is protected by its outer and inner lining as it is a chemically stable substance, unless there is physical damage such as tears or holes. However, the water-repellent finish on the outer fabric deteriorates with repeated use. Eventually, the outer fabric will absorb rainwater.

Water-absorbing rain jackets are heavy and cold, causing fatigue and loss of body heat for your adventure. This is fatal in outdoor activities where you need to conserve your strength and body heat.

Gore-Tex's waterproof properties are still demonstrated in these conditions. However, when the outer fabric absorbs rainwater, the film of water on the surface interferes with Gore-Tex's breathability.

In addition, after repeated use, the lining will also become contaminated with sweat and skin oil. In this case, the dirt on the surface of the lining also hinders the breathability of GORE-TEX.

Now the excellent performance of GORE-TEX is no longer properly demonstrated.

Act.3 Professional Maintenance bring GORE-Tex the best performance back

Regular maintenance and cleaning is essential to maintain the water repellency of the outer fabric and the cleanliness of the lining for GORE-Tex.

Washing and maintenance of GORE-TEX can be done by yourself using commercially available materials. However, if you are not satisfied with the washing and water repellent treatment you do yourself, you should contact a professional.

This is where you need the help of a professional. If you ask a professional, they will be able to perform a more advanced water repellent treatment than commercial water repellent sprays, thanks to advanced technology and well-equipped facilities. They can also keep the lining and exterior clean and beautiful, and repair other deterioration.
